Lemonade and Stitches

Throughout my childhood, wherever we lived, there was always a vibrant, organic community made up of friendship, trust, and a sense that we were all in this together. It was common among the six siblings to become buddies with siblings from other families in the community. That’s how it was…

The New Forty

I have a question for Albert. (Albert Einstein, that is.) If time is relative, why can’t I get it to slow down or speed up when I want it to? I’m sure he’d say it’s complicated… What I’ve deduced over 60 years of my own empirical research is that the…

My Writing Journey

I was in elementary school when my mother gave me my first diary for Christmas. I had a lot to write about but was too concerned about my sisters reading it to write the real stuff. I purchased my second diary with my allowance. It was one of those five-year…

Mom: A Profile in Courage

I was about eight years old when my mom gathered her six girls on the living-room sofa in our Arkansas home to tell us some “very important news.” My oldest sister and I listened intently while my four little sisters were squirming and uninterested. Mom sounded excited. “We’re moving North…

25 Life Lessons

We all have them: things we’ve learned over our lifetime. Over five decades of living has taught me a few things. Here are twenty-five of the hundreds, probably thousands, that I’ve learned. The world is full of magic. Value- Everyone and everything is supremely valuable. We decide, moment by moment…

Community

My mother was raised as an only child who yearned for family and worked hard to foster her own community. We had aunties, uncles, and cousins who I was disappointed to learn were not blood, and some who I was disappointed to learn were. My mother saw to it that…

My Father

As a child, I don’t remember missing my father a lot, but the times I did were sad and embarrassing for me. I was about age seven when our family of eight became seven. We left our father in Arkansas and moved to Detroit. I hadn’t seen it coming. What…

COVID-19 Vaccine Chronicle

COVID-19 Vaccine Chronicle After first thinking I would wait until Spring when (in my mind) my preferred vaccine (Pfizer) would be available, I took the plunge and accepted the COVID-19 Vaccine that was being offered at work (Moderna). …

United States of Apocalypse

United States of Apocalypse I read somewhere that the word apocalypse does not mean final destruction and undoing of all things as I had thought, but rather an uncovering, a revelation of what has existed but has not been seen. There have been apocalypses throughout history; I’ve read about some…

Wonder

I wonder what the ancients thought when they saw the moon turn a reddish hue. An object of reverence and worship for some. They gave attention to the moon every evening back then; it never escaped notice…I’m sure of it. More than 100 times over my 60 revolutions around the sun and yet I have not noticed, or turned aside to see the moon turn red. Proof that there is movement and play between Earth, and Sun, and Moon. Being in each other’s shadow reveals another dimension of wonder…the moon blushes.
